The opening message is the hardest part of online dating. 'Hey' and 'How are you?' get ignored — not because you're unattractive, but because everyone else is saying the same thing. Here's how to write openers that actually work.

Reference something specific from their profile

The single most effective opening message references something specific from the other person's profile. 'I noticed you mentioned you hiked the Appalachian Trail — how long did it take?' is infinitely better than 'Hey, you seem interesting.' It shows you actually read their profile and gives them something concrete to respond to.

Ask a genuine question

Open with a question, not a statement. Questions demand a response. The best questions are open-ended and slightly unexpected: 'The Monet exhibit or the Banksy exhibit — which do you go to?' or 'What's your go-to order at a coffee shop?' These are low stakes but show thought and spark engagement.

Use Hinge prompts to your advantage

On Hinge, you don't send a general message — you comment on a specific photo or prompt. This is your biggest advantage: you know exactly what resonated with you. Comment on that. If they wrote 'The most spontaneous thing I've done is…' and the answer made you laugh, say so.

Avoid these openers

Avoid: 'Hey', 'How are you?', compliments about appearance only ('You're so beautiful'), copy-pasted messages, anything that feels like a template, and overly long first messages. A first message should be 1–3 sentences max. The goal is to invite a reply, not to write an essay.

Don't overthink it

Perfectionism kills more conversations than bad openers. A slightly awkward, genuine message is better than no message or a formulaic one. Imperfect is human. Send it.

Perguntas frequentes

A short, specific, question-based message that references something from their profile. 'I saw you're a big Succession fan — who was your favourite character?' is perfect.
1–3 sentences is ideal. Short enough to be easy to reply to, but long enough to give them something to work with.
Reference something from their profile or photos. A simple specific observation or question is always better than 'Hey'. If their profile is thin, a fun hypothetical question works well.
